Triathlon 2024 Season Review

We started off racing at the Army standard distance duathlon at Thruxton motor circuit. 5 of us took on this 11k run, 40k bike and 4.8k run. After some fast racing, Andy Dunkerley took 3rd in age group and 1st guest, Stefan Farnworth took 3rd in his age group and Tim Fowler was 3rd in his age group.

Next up was the Army Super Sprint races at Holme Pierrepont. Due to be 3 super sprints back-to-back, the previous days rain, and the torrential rain on the day, meant it had to change to 1 triathlon followed by 1 duathlon. Aaron Samways, Kelly Ann and Tim Fowler braved the  elements to take on the course in the pouring rain. Aaron Samways took 3rd male guest, followed 17 seconds later by Tim Fowler in 4th. Kelly stopped on the bike course to rescue a duck involving an accident!!

In June we converged back to Holme Pierrepont to race the Army Sprint Championships. 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run. 6 of us raced , much better weather than the last time we were here! In the guest category,  Stefan was 1st, Tim Fowler 2nd, Aaron Samways 3rd and Andy Dunkerly 5th. On the female side of things, Lucy Marchi 1st and Kelly 2nd.

Our next event was the National Team Relay Championships, held on a very warm weekend in Cholmondeley Castle. A super sprint distance, the whole thing was held within the grounds of the estate. After some substitution, the team was prepared to race! After some super-fast racing, team “right side of the bars” took 5th place in the championship category. I’m hoping we can put a team in again in 2025.

Our final team event was the Inter-Service Duathlon, at the invitation of the RAF. Held on the old Cottesmore airfield, it was windy and drizzling, 4 of us took part for HMPS triathlon. In the guest category, Stefan was 2nd, Aaron 3rd and Tim Fowler 4th. Dan Turner raced his first ever Duathlon, hopefully we will see him at more events next year.

HMPS Tri members did very well at other races round the world, representing HMPS triathlon. A brief list follows.

  • Andy Dunkerly raced the Roc Triathlon in Wales.

  • Aaron Samways did outlaw half Nottingham in 5hrs 45 and the Dambuster tri in 2.41.

  • Danny Glover , Ironman Hamburg in 10hrs13. Vitruvian 70.3 7th in age group.

  • Christopher Hounslow flew the flag for us in the northeast, racing Cleveland sprint tri, Ellerton standard tri, Richmond sprint tri, Steelman 70.3 tri, and Big lime Olympic tri. A busy season for him.

  • Stef Farnworth raced Harich tri, 1st in age group, Norwich Tri, Cowman world champ’s qualifier, Bournemouth international triathlon Europchamps qualifier.

  • Tim Fowler raced Ashridge duathlon. Storm the castle duathlon, Cholmondeley Castle duathlon, Bedford tri triathlon England champs, Bournemouth international triathlon euro champ’s qualifier.

Other members have raced around the globe, meaning we once again had a successful and enjoyable 2024. Thanks to everyone who raced, and to the PSSA for their continued support going forward.
