Kick Off 1400 - Ilkeston Town FC

Match Report

On a very warm and sunny afternoon in September, the game began with a very cautious start for both sides with the players settling in and getting early touches. However, the deadlock was broken after 10 mins, when a ball played inside the Prison Service full back was converted by the Army. 1-0.

For the next 30 mins the Prison Team rallied and had chances of their own, with Wayne Powney blazing over the bar following the Prison Teams best move of the game. On 33 mins Wayne was involved again and was unfortunate to see his shot rebound off the bar, this time from a cross from Tim Hotchin.

The army had several raids forward but the two-centre halves of the Prison Team, both making their debuts, along with Barry Andrews in the Prison goal comfortably cleared up any threats. Just before half time another chance fell to Wayne, but once again he fired just over the bar doing well to get his shot off despite pressure from the Army defence.

The Teams went in at half time 1 – 0 to the Army

At the start of the second half the Army made 9 changes to their starting line-up. This paid dividends for them as they scored 2 goals in the first 10 mins of the second half.

It was not Wayne Powney’s game as he hit the post once again after good work by Lance Dillon. 15 mins into the half, Lance nearly caught the Army Goalkeeper out with a clever quick free kick making the GK tip the ball over from a fully 40 yards.

During a good spell for the Prison Team Ross Connor, another making his debut, broke through with pace but was denied by the post. The Prison Team enjoyed a 20 min spell in the Army half but could not break them down. The Army looked dangerous on the break, and this was confirmed when they went through and chipped the GK to make it 4-0

With the Prison Team only having 2 subs they started to fade, and the Army ran in a late goal to make the final score….. Prison Team 0 – 5 The Army

A lot of positives came out of the game, where the scoreline didn’t really reflect the fact that the Prison Team played so well and created chances. It didn’t help with several players dropping out for various reasons in the few days leading up to the game, changing the teams dynamic dramatically.

We had 5 players making their debuts, and the management could not have asked for any more from the players. We would like to wish the Army the best of luck as they head off to America to play in a tournament.

We look forward to the next game against Lloyds of London on the 17th of October, at Barking F.C.
